30TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE DEMISE OF KING MOSHOESHOE II

MASERU — The 30th anniversary of the passing of His Majesty King Moshoeshoe II was observed on Thursday at Thaba-Bosiu  as Basotho from across the county gathered to honour a leader whose vision and wisdom laid the foundation of  Lesotho.

His legacy in uniting the nation, protecting its people and shaping Basotho identity continues to be remembered and celebrated.

Lesotho Defence Force (LDF) Deputy Commander, Major General Matela Matobakele, has described Thaba-Bosiu as one of the most exceptional and vital mountains in Lesotho and across Africa, saying it played a central role in the survival and identity of the Basotho nation.

Major General Matobakele said the mountain faces north, noting that Basotho ancestors migrated from the north. He added that Lesotho has never experienced destructive winds such as those blowing from east to west, highlighting the unique geographical nature of the country.

He said Thaba-Bosiu has five passages and was strategically used by King Moshoeshoe II and his patriots to defend the Basotho nation during wars. He described King Moshoeshoe I as the overall commander who led his people from Thaba-Bosiu to protect Basotho and their land.

The Christian Council of Lesotho (CCL)led the commemoration with scripture from Philippians 4:4, which reads: “Rejoice in the Lord always, again I will say, Rejoice!” The council encouraged people to live in peace and always rejoice, describing King Moshoeshoe II as a man of peace. It urged Basotho to do things peacefully and follow the example set by Moshoeshoe II.

Meanwhile, the Principal Chief of Matsieng, Prince Seeiso Bereng Seeiso, officially opened the ceremony beginning with a prayer. He explained that the gathering was held to honour and remember King Moshoeshoe II.

Prince Seeiso Bereng Seeiso led a procession to Moshoeshoe I grave and later proceeded to King Moshoeshoe II grave to offer prayers.

King Moshoeshoe II died at the age of 57 in a road accident when his car plunged off a mountain road during the early hours of January 15, 1996.
