Berea, Nov. 23 — Berea police station through its Child and Gender Protection Unit (CGPU) has strongly urged the Tsoelike community to do away with cultural norms which expose or endanger the lives of women and girls to any form of abuse amid the climate change.
This has surfaced during the Berea District Disaster Management Team (DDMT) climate change awareness campaign staged for communities living at the foothills of Berea.
According to CGPU Berea Women Police Constable Masekoele Mosenye, amid the climate change which might trigger the weather events like drought, women and girls feel much heat and they are worst affected than men due to gender roles such as being active in kitchens and conducting activities like going to fetch firewood.
WPC Mosenye said during drought weather event, women and girls are the ones who are always out there walking long distance in search of drinking water and other household activities, and for that matter they are exposed to abuse such as being abducted to marriages or rape.
