BEREA TO HOST LITERACY, MATHS, SCIENCE COMPETITIONS

Berea, April. 13 The Ministry of Education and Training (MoET) in Berea District will host literacy, mathematics, science and technology competitions across seven centres in the district on April 30.

Acting District Manager at the MoET, Mrs ’Matholoana Sello, said in an interview on Monday that the competitions are aimed at improving children’s education and ensuring that learners are able to read and write effectively.

Mrs Sello said the initiative was introduced in 2022 following reports from post-primary schools which indicated that many learners were still struggling with basic reading and writing skills.

“These competitions are important because they encourage learners to work hard and strive to perform well. They also assist the Ministry to directly assess learners’ performance, as we often rely on reports from teachers,” she said.

She added that the competitions will involve learners from Grade One to Grade Seven, with winners at centre level progressing to district competitions scheduled for September.
