Maseru, May 28 — The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Representative to Lesotho Mr. John Kennedy Mosoti has revealed that the Gender-Based Violence (GBV) Centre in Lesotho is now operational.
Speaking during the Eliminating Gender-Based Violence in Lesotho workshop which was aimed at highlighting the critical role of the media in tackling and reporting GBV cases, Mr. Mosoti said the centre has been operational for about two weeks.
He noted that at least 20 victims are currently accommodated at the centre and are receiving different forms of support including counselling services and psychosocial assistance.
Mr. Mosoti added statistics indicate that about 86 percent of women and girls in Lesotho have experienced GBV at some point in their lives.
He further stated that despite the alarming number of reported cases, many incidents still go unreported due to lack of trust, fear and limited confidence in reporting mechanisms.
According to Mr. Mosoti, a number of survivors continue to suffer in silence, often confiding only in close friends or neighbours instead of seeking assistance from authorities or support institutions.
He stressed the importance of responsible media reporting in raising awareness, encouraging survivors to speak out and helping to eliminate stigma associated with GBV.
Mr. Mosoti also called for collective efforts from government, civil society organisations, the media and communities to strengthen prevention strategies and ensure protection and support for survivors of violence.
