INMATES RETURN TO SCHOOL

Maseru, Jan. 14 — Inmates students were not an exception as students across the country returned to school on Wednesday after Christmas holidays.

Crime Prevention, Rehabilitation and Reintegration of Ex-Offenders Association (CRROA) Executive Director Mr. Nkalimeng Mothobi, told the Agency in an interview that inmates students at all correctional institutions where the association deployed teachers excluding Qacha’s Nek and Female prison are back to school.

” Teachers and students are back in classes in full force, ready and motivated by the good performance of those who sat for Primary School Leaving Examinations (PSLE) in 2025″ he added.

He stated that the association deployed two teachers at each correctional institution with the exception of Mohale’s Hoek with four teachers due to sign language taught at the institution, as well as three in Juvenile Training Centre (JTC) and three in Maseru Central Correctional Institution (MCCI).

He indicated that the majority of those studying at correctional institutions based in the districts study non formal education, expressing hope that they will this year enrol in formal education same as  those studying at JTC and MCCI.

However he said lack of resources, which include amongst others, teaching aids and textbooks remains a challenge at correctional schools , indicating that the association will this year work jointly with the Ministry of Education and Training through Lesotho Distance Teaching Centre (LTDC) and conduct school inspections to ensure teaching quality and learning environments amongst others.

He therefore called on correctional officers to support both students and teachers as education is part of rehabilitation which would contribute towards ensuring inmates never re-engage in criminal activities when released from prison.

Meanwhile, at least 17 inmates sat for PSLE in 2025 and 10 obtained basic level while seven obtained below level.
