Maseru, Aug. 19 — Following the launch of Coordination Mechanism in January, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Relations together with the Chinese Embassy held their first ever quarterly dialogue of the Bilateral Cooperation Mechanism between the two countries on Wednesday.
The dialogue led by the Ministry’s Principal Secretary Mr. Thabang Lekhela and Chinese Ambassador Mr. Yang Xiaokun brought together officials from both sides to strengthen bilateral cooperation and deepen mutual understanding.
The Coordination Mechanism is aimed to ensure the effective implementation of the outcomes of the People’s Republic of China’s Foreign Minister Mr. Wang Yi’s visit to Lesotho in January.
This mechanism is result-oriented and action-focused with its main purpose being to maintain close coordination on major issues, to strengthen their mutual support, to review progress in the implementation of key cooperation projects, to facilitate problem-solving and to exchange views on regional and international developments.
Discussions focused on political mutual trust, high-level exchanges, the One-China Principle as well as follow-up to the visit of Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and the outcomes of the Forum on China Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) Summit 2024.
The Dialogue also considered multilateral cooperation and other areas of mutual interest, reaffirming the commitment of Lesotho and China to further strengthen their longstanding bilateral relations and cooperation.
Meanwhile, China and Lesotho has had bilateral relations for over 30 years with China supporting projects like Mpiti-Sehlaba-Thebe road, Ramarothole Power Plant, construction of Maseru District Hospital and Maseru Fire Station to mention a few.
