Maseru, July 14 — The Kingdom of Lesotho is participating in the 2026 High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) taking place at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, where world leaders and senior government officials are reviewing progress towards the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Held under the theme “Transformative, equitable, innovative and coordinated actions for the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its Sustainable Development Goals for a sustainable future for all,“ the forum serves as the United Nations’ principal platform for assessing global efforts to achieve sustainable development.
Representing Lesotho during the Senior Officials Segment, the Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Natural Resources, Mr. Lira Ralebese, presented the country’s progress on the Sustainable Development Goals currently under review. He highlighted key achievements made by Lesotho, outlined the challenges that continue to hinder implementation, and emphasised the need for stronger international cooperation and strategic partnerships to support the country’s national development priorities.
The discussions at the forum are taking place amid a difficult global environment shaped by the lasting impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, the growing effects of climate change, economic uncertainty, and increasing pressure on the multilateral system.
During the deliberations, member states reaffirmed the importance of collective action in accelerating progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals. They also welcomed renewed global momentum created through the Pact for the Future, the Global Digital Compact, and the Declaration on Future Generations, which seek to strengthen international cooperation and promote inclusive and sustainable development.
As the High-level Political Forum enters its Ministerial Segment, Lesotho has reaffirmed its commitment to engaging constructively with the international community in advancing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
The country continues to advocate for stronger global partnerships, increased investment, and coordinated international action to accelerate sustainable development and ensure that no one is left behind.
