MASERU – The Acting Prime Minister, Justice Nthomeng Majara has handed over nine vehicles for Correctional services and 3000 blankets for inmates at an event held at Maseru Central Correctional Institution (MCCI) on Tuesday.
The said commodities were received by the Minister of Law and Justice (MoLJ), Mr. Richard Ramoeletsi in the presence of Lesotho Correctional Service (LCS) Acting Commissioner, Matingoe Phamotse.
When handing over the vehicles amounting to over M2 million and blankets costing M900 000, Justice Majara said these resources is all about respecting human dignity in terms of easing mobility within LCS while also preserve quality health for inmates.
She added that transport is vital in facilitating movement hence central to rehabilitation processes at correctional institution.
Justice Majara noted that secure and controlled movement of inmates from correctional institutions to health services and to courts is also instrumental for protection of the society hence today’s initiative.
Therefore, she said by providing such resources is testament of government’s commitment to enhance the rule of law within LCS.
In the same note, Minister Ramoeletsi said the exercise is a valuable investment meant to strengthen the rule of law so that correctional institution delivers its work effectively.
“Safely, efficiently and timely, the vehicles will ease mobility making sure that Officers deliver to the best of their ability.”
He promised to ensure that the vehicles including the blankets are protected and used wisely to serve the purpose intended for, indicating as inmates are being rehabilitated, their dignity ought to be respected as well.
On behalf of LCS, Acting Commissioner, Matingoe Phamotse, the event assures the nation that correctional service reforms remain top agenda, expressing appreciation for the gesture.
He alluded that the handing over of nine vehicles will go a long way in addressing emergencies while also easing work in hard to reach areas within LCS.
Talking about the 3000 blankets which were given to inmates, he stated that such will mark a boost to the welfare of inmates as well as enhancing human dignity during hard and harsh winter conditions.
This event saw the presence of government officials, LCS Officers as well as inmates who entertained the crowd with gospel music.
