MASERU MASSACRE FREEDOM FIGHTERS’ REPATRIATION IN MARCH

Maseru, Jan. 21 — As part of its five-year plan to repatriate the remains of fallen freedom fighters from most Southern African Development Community (SADC) countries, the Republic of South Africa has announced that the repatriation of those who died during the Maseru massacre is expected to commence in the first week of March.

This was revealed by South Africa’s Deputy Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture, Ms. Peace Mabe, during her four-day working visit to Lesotho.

Speaking at a press conference held on Wednesday, Ms. Mabe said a joint task team comprising officials from both Lesotho and South Africa has already been established.

She added that a technical team is expected to be on site in March to begin grave mapping, as well as DNA testing and sampling where necessary.

Ms. Mabe noted that South Africa has already begun repatriation processes for fallen freedom fighters in countries such as Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana and Uganda, adding that the initiative aims to extend beyond these countries to include other SADC member states.

On behalf of the Government of Lesotho, the Minister of Tourism, Sports, Arts and Culture, Mr. Motlatsi Maqelepo, said the repatriation of the fallen freedom fighters from the Maseru massacre represents a significant step in strengthening bilateral relations between Lesotho and South Africa.

He said the two countries share a unique history bound by culture, tradition and beliefs, forged during the struggle for liberation.

Mr. Maqelepo stated that while the Maseru massacre remains a painful reminder of the past, it also stands as a testament to resilience and sacrifice.

He further indicated that the repatriation process is an occasion of profound moral and symbolic commitment, serving as an act of dignity, healing and closure for the affected families.

The Maseru massacre remains one of the darkest chapters in the shared history of Lesotho and South Africa, and the repatriation of the fallen freedom fighters is expected to restore honour and recognition to those who lost their lives in the struggle for freedom.
