Maseru, June 30 — Around 260 primary and post-primary mathematics teachers from across Lesotho have gathered at the National University of Lesotho (NUL) for a two day professional development workshop aimed at strengthening mathematics teaching and improving learner performance on Monday.
Speaking at the event, Lesotho Science and Mathematics Teachers Association (LSMTA) President Mr. Keketso Leteba said the workshop, hosted by LSMTA in collaboration with NUL’s Department of Science Education, is designed to equip teachers with practical knowledge, effective teaching strategies, and innovative classroom tools that can be immediately applied to enhance learners’ understanding of mathematics.
He said the initiative comes in response to persistent challenges highlighted by recent national examination results and classroom observations, which show that many learners continue to struggle with abstract mathematical concepts, problem solving, analytical thinking, and confidence in the subject.
Mr. Leteba welcomed teachers who had travelled from different districts, saying their participation demonstrated a strong commitment to professional growth and to improving learning outcomes.
He described mathematics as the foundation of science, technology, engineering, innovation, and economic development, stressing that teachers have the responsibility of equipping learners with critical thinking, problem-solving, creativity, and analytical skills needed for the future.
The LSMTA President said the workshop aims to strengthen teachers’ pedagogical skills, expose them to current trends in mathematics education, encourage collaboration among educators, and provide practical approaches that can improve learner achievement.
He also acknowledged the workshop facilitators for dedicating their time and expertise to support the professional development of mathematics teachers. He stated that the association reaffirmed its commitment to supporting teachers through continuous professional development, promoting excellence in science and mathematics education, and creating opportunities that empower both teachers and learners.
In an interview with the Agency, one of the teachers, Mr. Ramokhatla Seliane, expressed appreciation for the initiative, saying he was pleased with the effort made to organise the workshop. However, he noted that it would have been more effective if it had been conducted at each district resource centre, allowing more schools to participate.
Mr. Seliane said information is better understood when delivered firsthand rather than relying on a few teachers to attend the workshop and later disseminate the information to their colleagues. He further highlighted the need for schools to be equipped with computers, saying access to such resources would greatly support learners and improve the quality of education.
