MEDIA ACCUSED OF HOMOPHOBIC LANGUAGE

Maseru, Jan. 13–Media pushes back against claims of homophobic language at Electoral Inclusivity Dialogue.

Journalists participating in a national dialogue on inclusivity in Lesotho’s electoral process have dismissed allegations that the mainstream media has referred to homosexuals as “demons,” describing the claims as misplaced and rooted in confusion between professional journalism and unregulated social media content.

The issue surfaced during a recap session of discussions held the previous day, where participants reflected on challenges affecting inclusive participation in elections. 

Among the concerns raised was the role of the media in shaping public discourse around marginalised groups, particularly sexual minorities. Some participants accused journalists of perpetuating stigma through offensive and dehumanising language allegedly used in news reporting.

An article published by Lesotho Current Affairs; a social media-based news platform was cited as an example. The article reportedly used language that portrayed homosexuals in a negative and derogatory manner, sparking criticism from dialogue participants who questioned the media’s commitment to inclusivity and ethical reporting.

In response, representatives of the mainstream media rejected the accusations, stating that no recognised media house had published such content. They clarified that Lesotho Current Affairs does not form part of the country’s regulated mainstream media and operates primarily on social media…
