Quthing, July 30 — The Minister of Environment and Forestry, Mr. Thabo Mofosi, will officially present a construction company engaged to reconstruct a water-retaining dam wall at Letšeng-la-Letsie catchment on Monday next week.
The reconstruction works will be funded by the Regeneration of Landscapes and Livelihoods (ROLL) Project under the Ministry.
District ROLL Project Field Officer, Ms. Moselantja Rahlao, explained that the dam wall construction is part of project activities aimed at addressing critical leakage, restoring the degraded wetland ecosystem, and enhancing groundwater recharge.
She noted that the dam wall reconstruction will improve water storage and flow, rehabilitating habitats for rare and endangered bird, aquatic and plant species found in Letšeng-la-Letsie, Lesotho’s only internationally recognized Ramsar wetland.
Ms. Rahlao said the launch will be followed by a multi-stakeholder consultation meeting at Kubung Hotel in Upper Moyeni on Tuesday. The meeting will review and validate ROLL’s proposed restoration interventions, clarify institutional mandates, and identify collaboration opportunities.
She added that the meeting will establish three formal task teams namely, a national coordinating team, a district task force, and intelligence teams. These will operate under clear terms of reference and agree on a roadmap for long-term restoration, biodiversity monitoring, and potential conservation agreements to accelerate sustainable management of Letšeng-la-Letsie.
The ROLL Project is also being implemented in Thaba-Tseka, Leribe, Berea, Qacha’s Nek, and Botha-Bothe. It is funded by international partners including the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the Global Environment Facility (GEF), and the Government of Lesotho.
