MOSHOESHOE WALK EXPANDS IMPACT THROUGH SANITARY PAD DRIVE

MASERU — The annual Moshoeshoe Walk has evolved from being solely an adventure experience into a platform for social impact, incorporating a charitable initiative aimed at supporting vulnerable girls.

This 116 Kilometers walk which will this year held from March 05 to 07 is inspired by the legacy of King Moshoeshoe I and it now includes a charity drive dubbed Sporting Teen Girls which was introduced in 2025.

In an interview with the Agency, the Founder of the Walk, Mr. Thabo Maretlane said that the move was informed by the reality that the initiative focuses on collecting and donating sanitary pads to schoolgirls in need across Lesotho as many girls in the country continue to miss school due to lack of access to sanitary products.

“Many girls still stay home during their menstrual cycle because they cannot afford sanitary pads. Through this initiative, we want to restore dignity and ensure that no girl’s education is disrupted because of her period,” he said.

Mr. Maretlane noted that the organisers are encouraging hikers participating in the annual event to contribute by donating sanitary pads. He added that members of the public who may not be taking part in the hike are also welcome to support the initiative through donations.

The Moshoeshoe Walk, held in honour of Moshoeshoe I, continues to attract adventure enthusiasts while increasingly positioning itself as a vehicle for community development and social responsibility.

The walk retraces part of the historic journey associated with King Moshoeshoe I, symbolising unity, resilience, and the rich cultural heritage of the Basotho people. It attracts local and international hikers, adventure enthusiasts and cultural supporters who gather to celebrate the life and legacy of the revered leader.

Beyond promoting physical fitness and adventure tourism, the event has increasingly incorporated community development initiatives.

The Moshoeshoe Walk continues to grow as both a heritage tourism event and a platform for social impact in Lesotho.
