PC MOTSÓENE RAISES ALARM OVER FAMILY DISPUTES SPARKED BY NEW INHERITANCE BILL

Maseru, Nov. 05 — The Principal Chief of Leribe, (PC) Joele Mots’oene has raised concerns before the Senate over the growing number of family disputes allegedly stemming from the Administration of Estates and Inheritance Act, 2024.

Chief Joele questioned the Minister of Justice and Law, Mr. Richard Ramoeletsi, on whether he was aware of the escalating tensions and conflicts among families regarding inheritance and estate administration since the law came into effect.

He further pressed the Minister to clarify what measures the Ministry is implementing to address cases where the law appears unclear or unfairly affects vulnerable groups such as widows and orphans.

The Chief also called for stronger public education and awareness on the Act’s provisions to ensure families understand their rights and obligations under the new law.

In his response, Minister Ramoeletsi refuted claims of any major rise in family disputes, saying his Ministry has not recorded any increase in cases related to estate administration.

He explained that, under the High Court Rules, all estate-related applications must first be reviewed by the Master of the High Court, whose office reports no unusual surge in such matters. . . .
