MASERU – Poverty and hunger remain substantial challenges facing the globe including Lesotho, with rising food costs, economic shocks and climate changes negatively impacting orphanhood.
This has been affirmed by the 2021 United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) report about the state of orphaned children in the Country that has shown that 45.5 percent children face poverty and most of them are orphans, with Mokhotlong and Thaba-Tseka amongst other districts being mostly affected.
Unpacking the scenario, a Caretaker at God’s Love Centre for orphaned children in Maseru, Mr. Moeketsi Motants’i told the Agency in an interview that the centre does feel the pinch as well.
“The maximum number of our children housed here is 40 from ages 0-17, these are vulnerable children facing a number of challenges with poverty and hunger being on top.”
He explained that beyond HIV/AIDS that has seen children being left homeless while their parents have succumbed to a number of other related illnesses, hunger is making things worse, especially now with USA sanctions…
