PUBLIC URGED TO REMAIN VIGILANT

Maseru, Jan. 16 — Lesotho Meteorological Services (LMS) has called on members of the public to stay tuned to all local media platforms to keep up-to-date with its weekly weather briefs based on anticipated rainfall forecast from February until April.

According to LMS Director Dr. Teke Ramotubei, this forecast period remains critical for agricultural activities hence the need for the public to be updated on weekly weather briefs and agrometeorological bulletins that provide relevant and appropriate updates on the rainfall distribution, within the season for their anticipatory actions aligned to the seasonal prediction.

“This is critical in consideration that our models seem to have limited skill over much of the country except the north-western to northern lowlands and parts of the foothills” he said, indicating that the kill is relatively poor over western through to the southern lowlands.

He therefore revealed that in February, March and April, above average rainfall is expected with a shift from South to the central areas and further to the northern parts of the country.

He added that there is likelihood of normal rainfall with a slight incline of above normal towards the southern parts of the country.

Meanwhile, LMS has also released the 2025 seasonal report for August to December, which revealed that significant rainfall has been recorded since the start of the rainy season, indicating that November was generally wet, with numerous hail days and cooler conditions resulting from dominant upper level troughs, cut-off-lows, interior troughs, and ridging high-pressure systems.

In addition, very strong winds ravaged through some areas in the west where some destructions occurred on buildings in the month of December while the onset of the planting season August, particularly in Lesotho’s highland regions, was marked by significant rainfall.

Lesotho Meteorological Services aims to provide weather and climate information and services to support various sectors of the country, including agriculture, transportation, public safety and environmental management.
