Maseru, Aug. 14 — Prime Minister (PM) of Lesotho, Mr. Ntsokoane Matekane will represent the country at the Southern African Development Community (SADC) 46th Ordinary Summit of Heads of State that will convene on August 17 at the Durban International Conference Centre in Durban City, South Africa (SA).
At the top of Lesotho’s agenda at the summit will be campaigning for chairing of the SADC Troika from 2027 to 2028.
Press Attache in the PM’s office, Mr. Thapelo Mabote said if things go according to plan, Lesotho will come back from the summit as the incoming Chair of the SADC Troika.
President Cyril Ramaphosa, will host and chair the 46th SADC Summit under the theme, “Resilient, sustainable and inclusive industrialisation through Infrastructure Development, Agricultural and Critical Minerals Transformation in Pursuit of a Just World”.
In its statement, the SA government said the theme emphasises the development of infrastructure, agriculture, and critical minerals to advance industrialisation and build a SADC region that is industrially competitive, climate resilient, socially inclusive, and able to deliver a just and prosperous future for SADC citizens.
The 46th SADC Summit will deliberate on a wide range of issues aimed at accelerating regional integration and development, including the State of the SADC region, including global, continental and regional economic trends and updates on the SADC Region’s Socio-Economic and Political Performance, in line with the priorities of the SADC Regional Indicative Strategic Development Plan (RISDP) 2020–2030 and Vision 2050.
The SADC Council of Ministers, which is one of the SADC statutory bodies, is expected to conclude its meeting on Friday, ahead of the 46th SADC Summit.
The closing session will include remarks by the SA Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Mr Ronald Lamola, in his capacity as the Chairperson of the SADC Council of Ministers.
