Maseru, Feb. 18 — Schools, particularly those in rural areas have strongly been urged to introduce nutrition clubs so as to tackle malnutrition and enhance learning.
The call is encompassed in the 2026/27 Fiscal Year Budget presented during the joint sitting for both Houses of Parliament in Maseru on Wednesday.
Presenting the Financial Policy Statement, Dr. Rets’elisitsoe Matlanyane, Finance and Development Planning Minister indicated that the proposed clubs will go a long way in encouraging good nutrition amongst learners.
She added that when learners eat well, schools will register positive results in terms of learning as well as promoting good health.
She mentioned that the proposal targets all schools, especially the rural ones where many are hard hit by poverty and hunger.
Meanwhile, the budget proposes M3.5 billion towards education to enhance quality learning outcomes underpinned in the education sector reforms.
This proposal comes just a few days after the Head of State, King Letsie lll in his capacity as African Union (AU) Nutrition Champion attended a summit which was held in Ethiopia for Heads of State last week.
The summit is said to have afforded the King an opportunity to explore stronger investments in preventing malnutrition across the continent, while also leading high level dialogues in issues of nutrition.
