SENATORS REFLECT ON DEMOCRACY’S RELEVANCE IN LESOTHO

Maseru, Sept. 16 — On the occasion of the International Day of Democracy, members of the Senate mark the global observance, but not without a sobering reflection on its local significance.

While the day is internationally recognised as a celebration of democratic values, several Senators expressed concern that democracy remains a distant ideal for many Basotho.

The President Mrs. Mamonaheng Mokitimi opened the session with a powerful reminder of what democracy truly entails, popular sovereignty, rule of law, separation of powers, fundamental human rights, political pluralism, accountability, transparency, free and fair elections, and an independent media.

She highlighted that this year’s global theme, “A World Turned Upside Down: Democracy and Inclusion in an Age of Insecurity” is a call to action, not just reflection.

“Democracy is not a spectator sport,” Mokitimi said. “It demands participation, vigilance, and courage from all of us.”

Senator Seabata Motsamai offered a stark critique, stating that Lesotho is far from democracy. He lamented what he described as widespread moral decay and a growing sense of helplessness among citizens. “We no longer have the energy to fight for it,” he said, pointing to the disillusionment caused by the conduct of those in power. . . .
