52 IMPRISONED IN THE FIRST WEEK OF APRIL

Maseru, April 13 — About 52 men have been accepted in prison between April 3 -6 this year.

This was said by the Lesotho Correctional Services Chief Information Officer Ms. Bokang Ramotena in the weekly reports that was held in Maseru on Wednesday.

Ms. Ramotena pointed out that 50 men were awaiting trial while two were found guilty. 

She indicated that of the 50 men awaiting trial about 17 inmates are arrested for murder, 10 for assault, eight high rate of theft, seven for rape while six were arrested for robbery.

Ms. Ramotena pointed out that one inmate was arrested for stock theft.  The other one had stolen money but was recently released from prison.

Meanwhile, Ms Ramotena revealed that 33 inmates were released, compromising two boys, 30 men and a woman.

She indicated that 15 men and a woman were released on bail, six on the law of speed trial, two men paid fine while three served their time in prison.

She further stated that one man’s case has been withdrawn and the other one on parole.

She also added that the two boys were released by the Office of Probation.

On the other hand, the nine inmates were transferred to other prisons in other districts (Leribe, Berea, Butha Buthe and Mokhotlong). 

Lesotho Correctional Service mandated by the constitution of the Kingdom of Lesotho to provide, secure and custody of offenders and pre- trial detainees who have been committed into custody by competent courts of law.
