BURNING OF RANGELANDS, A CALL FOR CONCERN

Qacha’s Nek, Aug.23 – Mr. Ts’itso Mohale, Department of Forestry, Range and Soil Conservation Range Technical Officer (RTO) expressed concern over escalating incidents of rangelands burning in the district.

In an interview with the Agency, Mr. Mohale said rangeland degradation is linked to food insecurity for both livestock and humans, poverty to the extent of food aid, and the need for alternative livelihood and income diversification as majority of the district’s population rely on livestock farming.

“The rate at which ranges are burnt is scary. This year we are facing a fire disaster that we are starting to see in the district and it got worse this month (August),” he said.
