Mohlale’s Hoek, May 18 — The Principal at Mohale’s Hoek High School, Mrs. Nthatisi Makhothi has confirmed that about 40 learners were taken to hospital, after eating apples which were allegedly dumped near Maqhena bridge on Friday morning.
In an interview with the Agency, Mrs. Makhothi indicated that students were boarding a school bus and came across apples dumped in bulk and together with the driver they collected some and shared them with other students upon arrival at school.
She noted that after sometime students started vomiting and some were attacked by diarrhoea and one of them was vomiting blood droplets.
Mrs. Makhothi stated that some of the students were kept for 6 hours observation at hospital and were released in the evening while 2 were admitted, but however refuted allegations that the apples have been sold to students.
On the other hand, an officer commanding Mohale’s Hoek Police Station Superintendent Thato Ramarikhoane stated that CID department is thoroughly looking into the matter, as reports show that the school bus was also carrying students from other schools, who also took the apples, but no cases have been received from those schools.
