SWEET FOODSTUFF SNACKING IN BETWEEN MEALS INCREASES TOOTH DECAY – MAPETA

Mafeteng, August 28 — Inadequate brushing, snacking with sweet foodstuff between meals, sticky and sweet food stuff are the main factors that increase the chances of tooth decay.

The remarks were made by the Dental Therapist Mr. Ruchina Mapeta from Mafeteng Regional Hospital when addressing Matsepe High School pupils to commemorate Oral Health Awareness Week where he said proper oral hygiene technique to brush teeth with fluoridated toothpaste and a recommended a toothbrush at least twice a day in the morning and evening after meals including limiting sugar intake and application fissure sealants prevent dental caries, a dental disease of the teeth in which bacteria converts sugar from the food left on teeth to acid after a certain time.
