Maseru, Apr. 23 — To combat discrimination against those diagnosed with albinism and to create a society that is aware, the world will commemorate International Albinism Awareness Day (IAAD) on June 13.
This day is organised by the United Nations (UN) for the General Assembly that adopted a resolution in 2014, thus establishing June 13 as IAAD.
Speaking with the Agency, UN Expert on issues of albinism, Ms. Muluka-Anne Miti – Drummond reiterated the need to commemorate this day in a bid to motivate and empower people with albinism that their skin is not their inability.
She reiterated that following a research undertaken in some parts of the country locally, she has established that even though Lesotho has lesser attacks on people with albinism, but the need to raise more awareness, educate the society on albinism, how it affects those with it as well as challenges facing them remains vital.
