INMATES ESCAPE AS LIGHTS SWITCHED OFF

Maseru, July 19 — One of the inmates who escaped from Maseru Central Correctional Institution (MCCI) says they escaped immediately when lights were switched off.

An Inmate, Aumane Nkoale said this when testifying before the Commission Of Inquiry on the escape of inmates.

He said lights are usually switched off around 21:00 p.m at Maximum prison, saying they escaped 40 minutes after they were switched off.

He indicated that he was re-captured at Police Training College (PTC) after a Policeman, whom he voluntarily told he had escaped, alerted MCCI.

He said he and another inmate whom he fled with were assaulted by Lesotho Correctional Service officers in the quantum upon re-capturing until they arrived at MCCI gate, where they were also assaulted by other officers.
