Maseru, June 05 — The Commandant of the Military Training Institute, Brigadier General Motenalapi Mohololi, has expressed concern over the declining physical fitness of young people joining the military.
Speaking during the completion of a military training programme held at Makoanyane Barracks today, Brigadier General Mohololi said many of the recruits who completed today struggled physically throughout the training.
He attributed this to the increasing use of drugs among young people, which often results in underlying health conditions that become evident during rigorous military training.
He also pointed to poor nutrition as a contributing factor to the weak physical condition of some recruits.
According to the Commandant, a number of trainees were unable to complete the programme because they could not meet the required physical demands.
Brigadier General Mohololi has appealed to the government to experdite future military recruitment processes, warning that prolonged gaps between recruitment exercises could result in an even smaller pool of physically fit candidates.
He stressed the importance of promoting healthy lifestyles among young people to ensure that future generations are adequately prepared to serve in the country’s security forces.
