LERIBE, July 25 – The Ministry of Natural Resources on Friday met contractors in Ts’ehlanyane to assess progress on the construction of a tunnel that will supply water from Ts’ehlanyane to the Hlotse reservoirs.
The meeting provided contractors with an opportunity to update the ministry on the progress made on the project, which is expected to improve water supply in Leribe and Maputsoe.
Speaking during the visit, Minister of Natural Resources, Mr. Mohlomi Moleko, expressed satisfaction with the progress made by the contractors.
He also stressed the importance of obtaining water use licences for businesses, farmers and other water users.
Mr. Moleko said the licences will enable the ministry to monitor water usage and determine the amount of water required through the installation of water meters.
He said the government remains committed to ensuring that all Basotho have access to clean water, adding that reliable water supply will improve service delivery in sectors such as health, education and business.
Leribe District Administrator, Mr. Letsema Khalanyane, said the district has experienced water shortages for many years, expressing hope that the project will bring a lasting solution.
He appealed to community members to protect the infrastructure so that it continues to benefit both the current and future generations.
Member of Parliament for Pela-Ts’oeu Constituency, Mr. ‘Mope Khati, said community leaders have a responsibility to work together to ensure that local needs are prioritised whenever development projects are implemented.
He also called for increased public awareness to encourage communities to work closely with the government, relevant departments and contractors implementing development projects.
The tunnel project, which will supply water to Leribe and Maputsoe, is expected to be completed by the end of September this year.
