Maseru, Aug. 01 – Guests, friends, traditionalists on Saturday marked the beginning of the New Year through a traditional prayer and ceremonial cleansing of ploughs, a ritual that symbolises readiness for the summer planting season.
The ceremony led by Morena Masupha David Seeiso at his residence in Maseru on Saturday.
It brought together traditional leaders, church representatives and members of the community to seek God’s blessings ahead of the farming season.
During the prayer session, participants prayed for favourable weather conditions, sufficient rainfall and a successful agricultural season that would result in good harvests and improved food security for the country.
The ceremonial cleansing of ploughs remains an important Basotho cultural practice.
It represents the preparation of farming tools before they are taken to the fields for cultivation and marks the start of the planting season.
The event also highlighted the strong connection between Basotho traditions, agriculture and spirituality, as communities continue to combine cultural practices with prayer in seeking prosperity for the nation.
The annual ceremony reflects the importance of agriculture in the livelihoods of many Basotho households and encourages farmers to begin the new farming season with hope, unity and commitment to food production.
