MASERU – At least 40 Basotho have been awarded fully funded scholarships by the Government of India through the Indian High Commission to Lesotho to pursue higher education in India during the 2026/2027 academic year.
The scholarships, offered under the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), will enable the recipients to study in higher learning institutions of their choice in various fields.
Speaking during the scholarship award ceremony, Indian High Commissioner to Lesotho, Mr Biju Abraham, said the programme reflects the strong bilateral relations between Lesotho and India.
He said education remains an important driver of national development and economic growth, expressing confidence that the scholarship recipients will acquire knowledge and skills that will contribute to Lesotho’s development.
Mr. Abraham described India as a country rich in cultural, linguistic and educational diversity and encouraged the students to make the most of the opportunity.
He urged them to use the knowledge and experience gained in India not only for their personal benefit but also for the development of Lesotho.
Indian High Commission First Secretary, Mrs Sona Soman, said the scholarship covers tuition fees, accommodation, return air tickets and a monthly stipend for the duration of the students’ studies.
She, however, urged the recipients to comply with all the terms and conditions of the scholarship to avoid its cancellation.
Speaking on behalf of the Government of Lesotho, Mr. Ngaka Ramoroke from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed appreciation to the Government of India for its continued support towards the education and development of Basotho.
He said India has, over the years, made a significant contribution to education in Lesotho through various scholarship programmes.
Mr. Ramoroke assured the recipients that the governments of Lesotho and India will continue working together to ensure their well-being during their studies.
He also encouraged them to uphold good conduct and represent Lesotho with dignity as ambassadors of their country.
Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, the scholarship recipients thanked the Government of India for the opportunity.
They said the scholarships mark an important step towards achieving their educational and career goals and will enable them to acquire skills needed to help address the country’s development challenges.
