Maseru, June 19 — A clean-up initiative has restored a once neglected site in Maseru as part of efforts to improve environmental conditions and reclaim the area for public use.
Speaking in an interview with the Agency, founder of Clean Lesotho Initiatives, Mr. Katleho ‘Muso said the organisation identified the area because of its condition and visibility to both residents and visitors passing through the area.
He said the site had become unattractive due to overgrown vegetation and scattered waste, while some people use it for activities that contributed to the deterioration of the area.
Mr. ‘Muso noted that the clean-up forms part of broader efforts to improve vulnerable areas and create healthier surroundings for communities.
He said the organisation is currently working towards transforming the area into a recreational park, although discussions with the Maseru City Council (MCC) are still ongoing.
According to Mr. ‘Muso, improper waste disposal remains a challenge in many communities, with plastic waste, food containers and refuse bags often being dumped in open spaces.
He indicated that Clean Lesotho Initiatives currently fund its activities through proceeds generated from egg sales and gardening services, adding that the organisation does not receive financial support from any institution.
Mr. ‘Muso further said media coverage has assisted in raising awareness about environmental cleanliness and encouraging communities to take responsibility for keeping their surroundings clean.
He urged members of the public to dispose of waste responsibly and contribute towards maintaining a clean environment.
