Maseru, Aug.11 — The relentless gale tore through communities from Monday morning until early Tuesday, leaving families stranded after blowing away houses.
In Roma, a portion of St. Joseph’s hospital and Roma College of Nursing were damaged as roofs were ripped off and structures compromised by the fierce, howling winds.
The community has also suffered heavy damage with neighbourhoods transformed into disaster zones with scattered debris.
Families have lost their homes and shelter as the fierce gale-force winds battered the area through the night.
People feel scared and are left with very little help.
Speaking in an interview Community Councillor Mr. Sipho Ramalitse has confirmed that there are a number of families affected by the strong winds saying they are still compiling the list to have accurate data of the victims.
He said some of the affected do not have any alternative shelter therefore they have informed the Disaster Management Authority (DMA).
On the other hand, the District Administrator Mr. Paul Lewake together with the District Disaster Management personnel will visit some of the areas including Nazareth and Roma affected by the winds.
Meanwhile the Rapid Response Team is also set to conduct assessments across the district.
