Berea, June 19 — The Lesotho Mounted Police Service (LMPS), through its Department of Fire and Rescue, conducted a disaster preparedness awareness campaign in Bela-Bela on Friday, aimed at equipping community members with basic skills to respond to emergencies and reduce disaster risks.
Superintendent ‘Muso Lehlokoa of the Department of Fire and Rescue said the initiative seeks to educate communities on how to react appropriately when disasters occur, adding that preparedness has become increasingly important as climate change continues to increase the occurrence of shocks and disasters.
He said disaster risk reduction measures should be strengthened through the identification of hazards in schools, noting that there are still few schools with Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) clubs.
He further explained that first responders should first assess the patient’s response, place the victim in the correct position, and, where necessary, improvise a stretcher using blankets or clothing, along with sticks, to transport injured persons.
Learners from Kolojane Primary School demonstrated first aid techniques under the guidance of Superintendent Lehlokoa, including mouth-to-mouth resuscitation for accident victims.
