Mohale’s Hoek, June 16 — The Ministry of Environment and Forestry has confirmed to have pleaded with some community members at Shalane to dispose off by burying the carcass of an animal which they apprehended but eventually died, nonetheless villagers consumed the animal in question.
In an interview with the Agency the Ministry’s District Coordinator, Mr. Charles Matlabe noted that the message has been clearly communicated with Chief Hlomelang Teane to inform villages to never consume dead animal’s meat for health purposes, a message the latter confirmed to have delivered to the community, but expected they would not take it seriously.
Mr. Matlabe pointed out the animal which is believed to be from Zastron has been spotted at various places and the assumption was that it was safe until it was caught by villagers, as it appeared dehydrated, and having broken jaws.
On the other hand, Rorisang Matete one of those who consumed the meat, informed the Agency that the animal succumbed to injuries, and they could not just dispose it off, adding wild animals meat is more delicious than the one of domestic livestock.
Matete further added that some individuals who refused to consume the meat were more worried about the animal of which blood was not drained out, as they consider it unfit for religious and dietary consumption, however noted it still remains to be seen if anyone would get sick, but noted it is most unlikely, as all of them still look healthy.
