LMPS WARNS BASOTHO AMID ANTI-FOREIGN PROTESTS IN SA

Maseru, Oct. 11 — Lesotho Mounted Police Service (LMPS) has warned the public to exercise caution, following recent violent protests targeting foreign nationals in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.

LMPS Spokesperson Superintendent Thabo Mohai urged members of the public to remain vigilant, take necessary precautions and prioritise their personal safety in light of the situation.

Meanwhile, a South African newspaper has reported that the National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure has reaffirmed its commitment to containing the situation.

It also reported that law enforcement agencies have made significant progress in curbing the violence, apprehending perpetrators and restoring stability in the affected areas.

Earlier, the Government of Lesotho repatriated undocumented Basotho migrants on June 27, ahead of the “March and March” movement’s planned national shutdown on June 30, in protest against undocumented foreign nationals in South Africa.

The movement also announced that it would continue staging protests every Thursday until the South African government addressed its demands.

The repatriated migrants had been residing in the provinces of KwaZulu-Natal, the Western Cape, Limpopo and Gauteng.
