FACTORY WORKERS GET FIVE PERCENT INCREMENT

Maseru, Apr. 18 — The government has gazetted a new minimum wage giving factory workers a five percent wage hike for the 2024/25 financial year.

The new salaries are with effect from this month (April).

Workers in construction have been awarded seven percent while other sectors still outside the civil service have been awarded a six percent salary increment.

With the average minimum wage in the factories currently between M2, 459 and M2, 745 monthly, the wage hike means the workers will now earn between M2, 582 and M2, 882 per month.

Speaking in an interview, National Clothing and Textile and Allied Workers Union (NACTWU) Deputy Secretary General Mr. Tšepang Makakole said that they have accepted the increment as it was the only offer put on table by the employer but said that it is still not a living wage.
