WHO ADVOCATES FOR WORLD NO TOBACCO DAY

Maseru, May 27 — Tobacco remains a major cause of various non-communicable diseases, including cancer, cardiovascular diseases and respiratory illnesses, leading to millions of preventable deaths worldwide.

The World Health Organization (WHO) Lesotho notes the significance of May 31, celebrated globally as World No Tobacco Day. This day highlights the critical fight against tobacco to address the widespread public health challenges posed by its use.

The theme of World No Tobacco Day 2024 is ‘Protecting children from tobacco industry interference’. This theme aims to shield future generations and ensure the continued decline in tobacco use.

WHO draws attention to the alarming trend of the tobacco industry’s targeted marketing towards youth. These marketing strategies are increasingly sophisticated, leveraging digital platforms and social media to reach younger audiences.
