ROMA COMMUNITY PETITION NUL

Maseru, April 23 — Roma community on Tuesday handed over a petition to the National University of Lesotho (NUL) management.

The petition started with a march from Mahlanyeng to the university main gate.

Reading the petition on behalf of the organizing committee Dr. ‘Mantsejoa Thakaso said that they are concerned as the community of vandalism of community  property by the students which include street vendors, stalls, taxis as well as retail stores.

She said that this behavior could lead to investors leaving the area thus affecting development of Roma.

She said that students burn tyres and block the road saying that affects health services in that it delays ferrying of patients to the health facility. While it also affects the transport sector in ferrying commuters to different destinations.

She indicated that NUL management together with students should solve their problems amicably and within their parameters.

She said that as a community they will hold NUL management and students accountable for any vandalism in the future.

She stated that they have resolved that any activities by students be held within the campus saying that NUL Management should take responsibility and not throw their responsibility to the community.

Receiving the petition the Registrar Mrs. Liteboho Maqalika-Lerotholi in the presence of the Vice Chancellor Professor Isaac Fajana, Students Representative Council (SRC) President Tumo Tsanyane and other management staff said that they promise to read the letter and thoroughly learn of its contents.

She said that thereafter they will have a way forward.

Meanwhile the letter attached a petition with signatures of about 875 community members.
