Maseru, Jan. 13 — Although the government of the People’s Republic of China handed over the new Agricultural Storage and Logistic Infrastructure to Lesotho in December last year, the facility, which is based at Ha Foso, has not been operational yet.
This was confirmed by the Chief Information Officer in the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Nutrition Mr. Lereko Masupha in an interview with the Agency.
Mr. Masupha said this is due to logistics issues which include employment of staff amongst others.
Meanwhile the Minister of Agriculture Food Security and Nutrition Mr. Thabo Mofosi earlier at the handing over ceremony revealed that the Ministry intends to hire people with technical competence as well as youth who will undergo training and utilize acquired skills to ensure food is stored safely and the facility is run effectively.
On the other hand, the Area Chief of Ha Foso, Mr. Masupha Majara earlier told the Agency in an interview that he was looking forward to employment of youth residing at his village at the storage, as this will not only address youth unemployment but crime and drug abuse, which are main challenges facing the village.
The Agricultural Storage and Logistic Infrastructure, which worth M150 Million is meant to amongst others, store food grains which the government usually buys from farmers and distribute to vulnerable people.
