UNDP, UNFPA HOST LDF AWARD CEREMONY

Maseru — The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), in partnership with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), hosted a certificate award ceremony for Lesotho Defence Force (LDF) Youth Development Programme Officers who completed training on the Prevention of Sexual Exploitation, Abuse and Harassment.

The event, held in Maseru on Thursday, marked an important step in strengthening the protection of young people within the LDF youth development programme.

Speaking at the ceremony, UNDP Resident Representative Ms Jacqueline Olweya said the training focuses on preventing sexual exploitation, abuse and harassment, especially among young people. She noted that Lesotho, as a member of the United Nations, has a responsibility to uphold these values.

She emphasised the importance of the initiative, saying young people are not just future leaders, but leaders of today. She commended the officers for their courage in taking part in the training and for their commitment to protecting others.

UNFPA Representative Dr John Kennedy Mosoti said the LDF showed strong leadership by seeking support to address challenges within its youth programme. He explained that asking for help reflects accountability and transparency, which are key in building a safe and supportive system.

LDF Public Relations Officer Lieutenant Colonel Sakeng Lekola said the force remains committed to peace and the protection of young people. He added that working with partners like the United Nations helps strengthen their efforts, especially in tackling issues such as sexual exploitation and abuse.

He highlighted that the LDF trains youth from the age of 14, and stressed the importance of continuing such partnerships for the benefit of future generations. He also encouraged the trainees to share the knowledge they have gained with others in their communities.

Speaking on behalf of the trainers, Sergeant Mosuoe said the training has helped raise awareness on issues that many people did not fully understand. He added that the officers are now better prepared to protect and support young people.

One of the trainees, Bula Thetsane from Boot Camp 2022, expressed gratitude for the opportunity. He said the knowledge gained will not only help him, but also benefit his community.

The ceremony highlighted the importance of working together to create safer environments for young people and to build a stronger, more responsible society.
