SENATE ADOPTS CHILDREN’S PROTECTION, WELFARE AMENDMENT BILL

Maseru, June 04 — The Senate has adopted the Children’s Protection and Welfare (Amendment) Bill 2023, a significant step towards strengthening the protection of children’s rights and welfare in Lesotho.

Minister of Gender, Youth, Sports, Arts, Culture and Social Development, Pitso Lesaoana, has commended the House for passing the Bill, saying it introduces important measures aimed at safeguarding vulnerable children from various challenges that negatively affect their mental and physical wellbeing.

He noted that children face increasing risks, including abuse, neglect, exploitation and other social challenges, making it necessary to strengthen legal protections that promote their safety and development.

Supporting the adoption of the Bill, Principal Chief of Matsieng, Chief Seeiso Bereng Seeiso said communities must serve as the first line of defence in protecting children.

He emphasised that every child deserves a fair opportunity to grow in a safe and supportive environment, adding that children who are properly protected and empowered are better equipped to defend themselves against abuse and other harmful situations.

The amendment is expected to enhance child protection mechanisms and reinforce the country’s commitment to ensuring that every child enjoys their fundamental rights and reaches their full potential.
