MASERU — His Royal Highness Prince Lerotholi Mohato Seeiso has called for stronger measures to protect children from online dangers, including cyberbullying, human trafficking, sexual exploitation and loss of privacy.
Speaking at the opening of the Children’s Parliament session in Maseru on Thursday, Prince Lerotholi said children often lack the knowledge and skills needed to navigate online spaces safely.
He said while the internet provides children with opportunities to access education, gain knowledge and develop skills, its misuse could expose them to serious emotional and psychological harm.
Prince Lerotholi said inadequate online protection could result in emotional distress, loss of privacy, exposure to sexual exploitation and long-term psychological harm.
He called for the strengthening of legal frameworks, improved digital literacy, enhanced institutional capacity and collaboration among stakeholders to create a safer online environment for children.
“As our country advances in digital transformation, child online protection must become a central policy consideration,” he said.
Prince Lerotholi said investing in child online protection was an investment in the country’s future, responsible digital citizens and sustainable development.
He also urged parents and guardians to take an active role in guiding children’s use of the internet and digital devices.
The Children’s Parliament brings together children to discuss issues affecting them and provide a platform for their voices to be heard on matters concerning their wellbeing and future.
