DESPERATE MEASURES IN QACHA’S NEK

Qacha’s Nek, Sept. 2 — During a crucial visit to Tebellong on Monday, the United Nations (UN) team, led by Assistant Secretary-General Ms. Reena Ghelani, encountered the severe impact of a deepening food insecurity crisis.

Local women and girls shared harrowing accounts of how poverty and a lack of resources have driven young girls into dangerous intergenerational sexual relationships to secure basic necessities.

This has resulted in a troubling increase in emotional distress for both the girls and their mothers, child abandonment, separation, crime, Early and Unintended Pregnancies (EUP), and rates of HIV and STIs.
