Qacha’s Nek, Sept.3 — In the wake of a national food insecurity crisis declared by Prime Minister Ntsokoane Matekane on July 12, 2024, the urgency of the situation has prompted immediate action from both national and international stakeholders.
The United Nations (UN) team, led by Assistant Secretary-General and Climate Crisis Coordinator Ms. Reena Ghelani, along with key stakeholders conducted a high-profile visit to the hardest-hit area of Qacha’s Nek, Tebellong on Monday.
Their mission was to assess the drought’s impact and coordinate a robust humanitarian response.
The latest report from the Lesotho Vulnerability Assessment Committee (LVAC) paints a grim picture: nearly 700,000 Basotho are projected to face food insecurity in the 2024/25 year—a staggering 20 percent increase from the previous year. In Qacha’s Nek alone, over 29,000 people are already grappling with severe food shortages.
