MOTLOANG URGES FAMILY SUPPORT TO BOOST BREASTFEEDING, COMBAT MALNUTRITION

Qacha’s Nek, Nov. 14 — In a passionate call to action, Ms. Mots’elisi Motloang, Nutrition Apprentice with the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Nutrition (MAFSN) urged couples and communities to come together in support of breastfeeding mothers.

Speaking at a gathering in Ha Thube, Ms. Motloang highlighted the growing malnutrition crisis in the district, which has made stunting a dominant health concern.

She emphasized the critical importance of breastfeeding during a child’s first 100 days, stressing that failure to breastfeed exclusively during this crucial period can lead to serious health consequences, including malnutrition and developmental delays.

Ms. Motloang called for greater support from family members, particularly fathers and grandparents, to alleviate the burdens on nursing mothers and ensure proper care for infants.

“The first six months of a baby’s life should be dedicated exclusively to breast milk,” She explained. “Yet, many children are introduced to solids too early or face poor-quality diets, leading to malnutrition.” . .
