Cape Town, June 26 – Southern African Customs Union (SACU) member states are expected to consider a revised Strategic Plan aimed at strengthening regional integration and improving the livelihoods of people across the region.
Speaking during the opening of the 9th SACU Summit in Cape Town on Friday, South Africa’s Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition, Parks Tau said the revised strategy will guide the organisation towards sustainable economic growth.
He said the plan seeks to strengthen economic policy coordination among member states while promoting greater regional integration and development.
Mr. Tau said the strategy also aims to improve trade facilitation, strengthen customs administration and combat illicit trade across the region.

He noted that the revised plan will further strengthen SACU institutions to ensure the successful implementation of the bloc’s programmes.
According to Mr. Tau, the strategic objectives are intended to unite member states in their shared vision of economic prosperity and inclusive development.
He urged member countries to recognise the progress already made while remaining committed to deeper regional integration.
Mr. Tau said continued cooperation among SACU members will help create sustainable economic opportunities and improve the welfare of people throughout Southern Africa.
He concluded by calling on member states to remain focused on the long-term vision of building a stronger, more integrated and prosperous regional economy.
