SHEPHERDS WARNED AGAINST PASTURE BURNING

Botha-Bothe, Sept. 18 – Various stakeholders have issued a stern warning to shepherds against the practice of burning pastures, coupled with a threat of arrest should they persist in this detrimental behaviour.

At a handing over ceremony of sheep by the Storm Mountain Diamonds Minister of Agriculture, Food Security and Nutrition Mr. Thabo Mofosi, implored the district’s security apparatus to take decisive action against pasture arson. He emphasized that the act of burning pastures not only results in soil erosion but also eradicates specific grass species from the affected areas.

This was in response to challenges tabled by the Butha Buthe District Administrator Mr. Tsépa Chaba. Mr. Mofosi stressed that education on the perils of this practice had been disseminated widely, and continued offenses would be deemed criminal, warranting arrest and prosecution
