STREET LIGHTING ENHANCES SAFETY IN MASERU

Maseru, Apri.16 – Street lighting continues to play a crucial role in improving safety and supporting economic activity in Maseru, particularly during night-time hours.

In an interview, a local street vendor, Mr Thapelo Theko, said the installation of street lights has significantly improved his business operations. He noted that in the past, poor lighting made it difficult to keep his stall open after dark due to safety concerns and limited visibility.

“Now customers feel safer to stop and buy goods at night, which has helped me increase my daily income,” he said.

Meanwhile, a student at Limkokwing University of Creativity and Technology, Ms Lineo Limema, highlighted the importance of street lighting for learners who attend late academic activities.

She explained that many students walk back to their residences after study sessions, and proper lighting reduces fear of crime and road accidents.

“Well-lit streets allow us to focus on our studies without constantly worrying about our safety when returning home,” she said.

Mrs Malimpho Leboea, a night-shift worker, also emphasised the importance of street lighting for those who travel during late hours.

She said adequate lighting enables her to commute safely between home and work, especially at times when public transport is scarce and roads are less busy.

“Poor lighting makes travelling stressful, but when the streets are well-lit, I feel more secure and confident,” she added.

Residents have since called for continued investment in and maintenance of street lighting infrastructure across the country, noting its importance in enhancing public safety, supporting livelihoods and improving accessibility.
