Maseru, Feb. 11 — The United Nations has issued a powerful call to action, emphasizing that energy lies at the core of the climate challenge and is crucial to finding a solution.
The organization highlights the urgent need to shift away from fossil fuels and embrace renewable energy sources to mitigate the severe impacts of climate change, particularly in nations like Lesotho, which rely heavily on hydropower and are increasingly vulnerable to climate-related events like droughts.
Lesotho, has been grappling with extreme climate conditions that have led to one of the worst droughts in its history, affecting over 80 percent of the population.
The drought has significantly impacted the country’s hydropower sector, which provides around 90 percent of its electricity. This reliance on hydropower highlights the urgency for Lesotho to diversify its energy sources in light of the UN’s recommendations. The UN emphasizes that countries in vulnerable positions must take proactive steps to mitigate the impact of climate change, and the situation in Lesotho serves as a critical example.
