TRANSFER OF FUNCTIONS IN FIVE MINISTRIES SUSPENDED

Maseru, April 16 — The intended transfer of functions from the five Government Departments to the Community Councils have been temporarily suspended by the Law and Public Safety Cluster for further consultations.

This was stated by the Law and Public Safety Cluster chairperson Mr. Mokoena Ramakatsa during the cluster’s meeting with the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftainship, Home Affairs and Police in the New Parliament Premises on Tuesday.

Mr. Ramakatsa cited that the transfer of functions from the department of Water Affairs, Department of Environment, Department of Primary Health Care and Land Management be suspended to allow the Ministry to make further consultations and clarifications on some issues which were not clear.

He said it would not serve the intended purpose if the process of transfer of functions from these government departments could be transferred to the Local Councils as part of the Government’s decentralization initiative while it was clear that there are challenges on the way.
