Maseru, July 16 — Although inmates are classified at Maseru Central Correctional Institution (MCCI), block D which is based at the institution does not necessarily house gangsters.
This was said by Lesotho Correctional Service Deputy Commissioner Operations, Mosheoane Ts’olo when testifying before the Commission of Inquiry on the escape of inmates, after one inmate by the name of Sihle Sekants’i said he was placed in block D as a form of punishment and because he is alleged to be gangster.
Deputy Commissioner Ts’olo told the Commission that he could not say block D houses gangsters but inmates who pose a serious threat or high risk are placed there.
He indicated that inmates who stay in this block often confuse isolation with punishment, saying they are not placed there as a punishment but are isolated from other inmates.
